HIGHLIGHTS

River cruising is one of the most picturesque ways to experience Europe. Instead of packing and unpacking at every stop, you unpack once and let the scenery come to you. Medieval towns, vineyards and riverbanks drift past from the comfort of a small, intimate river ship.

On this Christmas Markets sailing, that scenery is paired with a festive atmosphere in every port. Travelmarvel Polaris is a great fit for clients who want a relaxed, well-organised way to see the highlights of the Netherlands and Germany, with the added charm of the markets at their best.

1. Comfortable rooms – The cabins are comfortable and well designed. I recommend upgrading to a panoramic balcony, as watching the world go by from your own room is a big part of the river cruise experience, especially in winter.

2. Outstanding staff and tour directors – The crew and tour directors were a standout. They learn your name and your preferences, which makes the service feel personal rather than scripted.

3. Great atmosphere on board – Coming into each new destination, the team hosts small events and talks about what to expect. In Germany we were entertained by special guests, the Bavarian Devils, who performed traditional music. It was a fun way to build anticipation before stepping ashore.

4. Optional shore excursions – Beyond the included tours, guests can reserve additional excursions at an extra cost to delve deeper into each destination. These are worth recommending to clients who want more than the included sightseeing.

5. Walking tours for every pace – The included walking tours offer a range of pace options, from slow-paced groups to more active walkers. This makes the itinerary accessible for mixed-ability couples and groups travelling together.

6. Access to the Christmas markets – Guides take guests to the most popular market areas, so you are not left to find the best spots yourself. Clients can then use their free time to browse, taste and shop at their own pace.

7. The food – The food on board was a real highlight, with a buffet breakfast, buffet lunch and three-course dinner. Lunch and dinner include house wine, beer, soft drinks and juice, which takes the stress out of budgeting for drinks.

8. Going through the locks – Passing through the locks is a unique experience. Some happen overnight, so you may not even realise at first, while others happen during the day and are fascinating to watch from the deck.

9. Staying active on board – Guests can keep up with their fitness goals in the gym or walk laps on the sundeck, which also offers a great vantage point for the scenery.

10. The heart of Europe, up close – With a small ship and a personal touch, this is Europe experienced in its most intimate form.
